The sim suite is situated in the Education Centre, which is a building to the south of the main hospital. It has a control room with a one-way mirror and is attached to a classroom which is used for theory and de-briefing. The sim suite is kitted with audio-visual equipment which makes remote viewing possible.
In addition to the sim suite, a mobile manikin is available for in-situ simulations around the hospital.
Poole has had a dedicated full-time simulation practitioner in post since 2015.
Simulation Training Education Training Program (STEPs)
A course for Foundation Year 1 Doctors. Each F1 doctor is invited to attend three afternoon sessions run by an experienced faculty.
The aim of this course is to expose each candidate to a variety of medical conditions and treatment pathways. This course is specifically designed to help build confidence and offer support in the early stages of the foundation years.
Simulations in this STEPs course are multi-disciplinary. Student nurses also partake in these simulations, in their own role. This allows discussions around communication, team working and personal limitations.
Delegate feedback - "Sim scenarios very useful in improving confidence of managing acutely unwell patients. Very supportive environment - great to have nurses and doctors together."
Ward Simulations - Roll out of the new Sepsis Screening Tool & Introduction to NEWS2
Simulations are available to all wards. Please contact either Rose Edwards, Laura Smith or Simon McManara to arrange a session.
#SimManTerry will be brought to a discrete area of a ward. Groups of staff (all disciplines and grades welcome) will spend 30 minutes with the team and run through a scenario.
The aim of this course is to provide an update on systems and procedures. But also to refresh knowledge and practice managing an acutely unwell patient in a safe learning environment.
International Medical Graduates (IMG) Simulation Program
This is a course aimed at IMGs who have joined us in Poole Hospital.
The aim of this course is to help orientate and integrate doctors who have trained in other countries. This course runs through scenarios which focus on treatmant pathways, local protocol, communication and team work.
