Virtual Reality Simulation for Diabetes Emergencies

Portsmouth Junior Doctor using the Oculus Rift headset in combination with the Oxford Medical Simulation Virtual Reality (VR) software.

The Virtual Reality scenarios allow the clinician to manage diabetes related emergencies in a safe learning environment against the clock. They enhance their knowledge of management of both Type 1 and Type 2 diabetes and their complications.

Initial impact has been overwhelmingly positive with all trainees finding the sessions useful to their learning and increasing confidence in managing Diabetes emergencies as well as time management and prioritisation.

We are a pilot site together with University Hospital Southampton to look at the use of VR and its impact on trainee confidence in managing the cases. The project is Sponsored by Novo Nordisk and NHS England.

The findings of this short study will be presented at the ASPiH Conference in Belfast in November 2019. Association for Simulated Practice in Healthcare https://aspih.org.uk/
